Extra cooking and baking often results in extra electricity
usage over the holiday season, but small changes can help customers save energy
and money. Sturgeon Bay Utilties
recommends the following tips:
- ·Leave the refrigerator door open while taking out
items needed – it’s more efficient than opening and closing it several times.
- · Keep the oven door closed, as opening the oven door
even once causes a temporary loss of 25 to 50 degrees. Bake as many dishes at
once as possible.
- · Match pan size to burner size and use lids to
conserve energy. For example, a 6-inch pan on an 8-inch burner will waste more
than 40% of the energy.
- ·Use glass or ceramic pans and turn down the oven
temperature by 25 degrees. Foods will cook just as quickly.
- ·Turn off the oven 15 minutes early to keep food
cooking while reducing energy use.
- · If needed, run the cleaning cycle right after taking
food out of the oven.
- ·Use microwaves or slow cookers when possible, as
they require considerably less energy than electric or gas ovens.
- · Run a load of dishes in the dishwasher rather than washing by hand, as the machine uses almost 40% less water. If washing in the sink, fill the wash and rinse basins instead of letting hot water run.
