SBU Receives Grant (8/22/2016)
Sturgeon Bay Utilities (SBU) is expected to receive $300,000 from the Department of Natural Resources to replace private lead pipes in 120 to 150 homes in the city, according to Cliff White, SBU operations manager.
An estimated 2,000 homes in Sturgeon Bay still have lead pipes, White said. Most of these homes date from before 1944, when lead pipes where phased out, he said.
Such pipes may elevate lead level at the tap, and even low levels have been determined to affect IQs, particularly in children.
“There is no acceptable level of lead, “ said White.
Work will begin next spring, and SBU will have two years to use the funds.
