Sturgeon Bay Utilities recognized for safe operating practices (4/23/2010)
Sturgeon Bay Utilities was recently honored by the American Public Power Association (APPA), earning one of APPA’s Electric Utility Safety Awards of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2009. SBU is one of 80 awardees among a pool of more than 200 entrants to the annual contest.
The utilities are categorized according to their number of worker-hours and judged by their incidence rate within each category. The incidence rate is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2009, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Winners are selected in each of the eight categories. SBU earned first place recognition in the category for utilities with 30,000 to 59,999 worker-hours of exposure.
“The safety of our workers and our citizens is of the utmost importance to SBU,” Jim Stawicki, General Manager said. “This honor is a reminder of the high standards we employ on behalf of our community.”
