Resolve to Shed Those kWh's
Do you have a hard time keeping your New Year’s resolutions? How about starting 2006 right by resolving to save energy? It may sound hard, but it actually takes little effort to change energy-wasting habits. Here are some simple actions guaranteed to trim those excess kilowatt-hours:
- Examine all of your appliances – from the dishwasher to the computer – to determine if they have an energy saving feature. Once you find it, set it and use it. You won’t notice the difference, but the savings will add up.
- Track down energy “vampires.” Even when not in use, some appliances still use electricity, so unplug those clocks, TVs, nightlights and radios in unused guest rooms.
- If you buy a major appliance like a washer or refrigerator next year, check the Energy Guide label that explains how energy efficient it is. Better yet, buy an ENERGY STAR® model. Even if it costs more initially, you’ll save over the life of the appliance.
- Install a programmable thermostat that automatically turns the heat down when you are asleep or out of the house. If you already have one, set back the temperature by 5 to 10 degrees when you go to bed or leave home for the day. You’ll see the difference on your electric bill.
