WPPI Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Wisconsin Public Power, Inc. (WPPI), the joint action agency of which Sturgeon Bay Utilities (SBU) is a member/owner, has geared up to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. As a joint action agency created under Wisconsin State Statutes, WPPI serves the needs of its 40 member utilities by providing both electric power and various other administrative services at reasonable rates.
Tom Paque, Vice President - Marketing with WPPI, attended the monthly meeting of the Sturgeon Bay Utilities’ Commission on August 8th. Mr. Paque provided a brief history of WPPI and provided insights as to the future of the business. Finally, Mr. Paque presented a plaque to Dave McAllister, President of the Utility Commission, commemorating 25 years of ownership of the joint action agency.
WPPI generates about 40% of the power it sells to members utilizing its own generating facilities. These facilities are powered by fuels including natural gas, coal and wind. WPPI and its members will soon decide on whether to invest in the ownership of a number of new electric generation facilities in and near Wisconsin.
WPPI currently serves over 150,000 customers and half of all municipal utilities in Wisconsin. The rates that SBU is able to maintain for its customers through WPPI are 10-25% below those of other local competitors.
